Lisette Nieves (born c. 1970), is the founder of "Atrevete Latino Youth, Inc.", an organization which focused on the educational and leadership training of young Latinos. ==Early years== Nieves' family moved to New York City from Puerto Rico and they settled down in Brooklyn, New York City. Growing up as a child of the working class, Nieves attended PS 181, IS 246 and John Dewey High School. The experience imbued her with a sense of social justice, which she expressed by organizing a soup kitchen, tutoring special education students, and revitalizing a feminist newspaper. She and her four brothers were raised by her single mother, whom she considers the main inspiration in her life.〔(Brooklyn College )〕 She took a course in sociology after she graduated from high school and according to her own account, the course changed her perspective of the world.〔(Businessweek )〕〔(The New York Carib News )〕〔( Profile: Lisette Nieves (NY ’90), Founder of Year Up NY )〕〔(Nieves: We cannot afford to squander potential )〕
